Erode is one of Tamil Nadu's biggest textile, dyeing and bleaching centres, and its water carries two burdens: hardness from the region's dry, mineral-rich terrain, and effluent concerns from its large industrial belt. For most homes the everyday issue is hardness — scale on taps and geysers — but the industrial pollution makes water testing especially important here.
Erode's groundwater dissolves calcium and magnesium from the local hard-rock terrain, producing water that tests hard to very hard in most borewell-fed areas. Cauvery river supply is softer where it reaches, but the river is seasonal and doesn't cover every locality, so a large share of the city and its textile belt depend on borewells — where hardness shows up quickly as scale.
This is important to understand clearly. Erode's dyeing and bleaching industry has, in parts of the region, caused groundwater contamination from industrial effluent over the years. This is completely separate from hardness, and a water softener does not remove industrial pollutants or dyes. If you're in an affected area, drinking water must be treated by a suitable, certified purifier — and a proper lab test is essential. Never assume borewell water is safe to drink in an affected area without testing.
Test your hardness in mg/L as calcium carbonate with a home strip or lab test. Given Erode's textile-effluent situation, it's strongly advisable to get a full lab test covering industrial pollutants and TDS if you drink borewell water. Above 180 mg/L means hard water.
