Quick answer: for most Indian homes, bathroom count is a reliable shortcut. 1–2 bathrooms needs a compact point-of-use unit. 2–4 bathrooms needs a whole-home unit. 4+ bathrooms needs an automatic unit with higher capacity. If your water is very hard (above 180 mg/L), size up one step.
That shortcut works because bathroom count correlates well with both household size and water usage. But if you want to size it properly — particularly for a larger home, or if your water is unusually hard — it's worth doing the actual calculation. This guide covers both.
Every softener sizing calculation, however it's dressed up, uses the same three inputs.
Measured in mg/L as CaCO₃ (or sometimes in grains per gallon). This is the single most important figure, because it determines how quickly the resin gets used up.
Water at 300 mg/L exhausts a softener roughly twice as fast as water at 150 mg/L, all else being equal. If you don't know your number, the testing guide shows how to measure it at home, and the signs guide covers what to look for.
More people means more water through the softener each day, which means more frequent regeneration for a given capacity.
Count everyone who lives there normally — not visitors, but do account for anyone who's home all day, since that raises usage noticeably.
A common planning figure for Indian homes is around 135 litres per person per day with standard fittings. That's a starting point, not a rule.
Adjust upward for a garden, a washing machine used daily, more than one bathroom in regular use, or anyone who takes long showers. Adjust down for an apartment with minimal fittings.
The underlying logic is simple: how much hardness passes through the softener each day determines how much capacity you need before it has to regenerate.

Most domestic units are designed to regenerate every few days rather than daily, which balances salt consumption against convenience. Commercial systems are usually sized to regenerate more frequently because throughput is much higher.
A note on the maths: softener capacity is quoted differently by different manufacturers — litres treated per regeneration, grains of hardness removed, or resin volume in litres. These aren't interchangeable. When comparing units, check which measure is being quoted before assuming one is bigger than another.

An undersized softener regenerates constantly. That means more salt, more water used flushing the resin, and — the real problem — periods when hard water passes through untreated because the resin is exhausted before the next cycle. It also wears the resin out faster, because it's being cycled harder than intended.
Oversizing costs more upfront and takes more space, but it isn't purely wasteful — a larger unit regenerates less often and lasts longer. The exception is timer-based units: if a large softener regenerates on a fixed schedule regardless of usage, it wastes salt and water resetting resin that wasn't exhausted.
Usage-based automatic units handle oversizing well, which is one reason they're worth the extra cost in larger homes.
If you're between two sizes, go larger — provided the unit regenerates by usage rather than a timer. The running cost difference is small, and you get longer resin life plus headroom if your household grows or your water gets harder in summer.
Commercial sizing works on the same principle but with different inputs. Instead of bathroom count you're working from peak flow rate — how many litres per hour the system needs to deliver at maximum demand — and total daily volume.
A hotel's peak demand at 7am is very different from its average, and sizing to the average leaves you supplying hard water exactly when you're using the most. That's why commercial installations usually warrant a site survey rather than a table.
