The short answer: if you're seeing white chalky deposits on taps, spots on dishes after washing, and soap that refuses to lather, you almost certainly have hard water. In most of India — particularly anywhere on borewell supply — hardness above 180 mg/L is common, and at that level the effects show up within weeks.
Hard water is water carrying a high concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals are picked up as water moves through rock and soil, which is why groundwater is usually far harder than treated municipal supply. They aren't a health hazard — but they don't stay dissolved. Wherever the water is heated or left to evaporate, they come out of solution as limescale.
That's the whole problem in one sentence: hard water leaves something behind everywhere it goes. Here's where you'll notice it first.
This is the most reliable sign, and usually the first. A crusty white or greyish deposit forms around tap outlets, on showerheads, and inside kettles. Scrub it off and it returns within days.
Showerheads are worth checking closely — when the spray pattern starts going uneven, with some holes blocked and others spitting sideways, that's scale narrowing the openings.
Glasses come out of the wash looking cloudy rather than clear. Cutlery has water spots even after drying. A faint white film builds on plates over time.
These aren't dirt — they're mineral deposits left behind as the water dried. No amount of extra rinsing fixes it, because the minerals are in the rinse water too.
You use more soap than seems reasonable and still get a thin, disappointing lather. Shampoo feels like it's not working. Dishwashing liquid needs a second squeeze.
This happens because calcium and magnesium react with soap instead of letting it foam, forming a scum. You're not imagining it — you genuinely need more product to get the same result, and that's a recurring cost.
Skin feels tight or itchy after a shower. Hair feels rough, looks dull, and won't hold a style. Some people notice it more in winter, but hard water is often the underlying cause year-round.
The soap scum that forms in hard water doesn't rinse away cleanly — it leaves a residue on skin and hair.
Towels lose their softness. Dark clothes develop a dull, greyish cast. Whites go slightly yellow over time. Fabrics feel scratchy despite using softener.
Detergent residue combined with mineral deposits gets trapped in the fibres. Over enough washes, it also wears fabric faster.
This one is easy to miss because it's gradual. Showers feel weaker than they used to. Taps take longer to fill a bucket. You blame the municipal supply.
What's often happening is scale building up inside the pipes, narrowing the bore. Unlike the other signs, this one is invisible until it's severe — and expensive to fix, because it means replacing plumbing.
This is the costly one. Your geyser takes longer to heat, runs up a higher electricity bill, and then fails years before it should. The washing machine needs service more often than seems fair.
Inside a water heater, scale coats the heating element and acts as insulation — so the element has to work harder and hotter to heat the same water. That's both the higher bill and the early failure, from the same cause.
Water hardness is measured in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO₃). Here's how the ranges break down and what you'd typically notice at each level.
