Hard water in Delhi NCR: why it happens and how to fix it

Across Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad and much of the NCR, borewell water is hard and often high in TDS. If your taps scale up, your geyser fails early, and your water tastes off, here is what is happening and how to fix it.

"Delhi NCR water" isn't one thing — it changes dramatically depending on whether you're on piped municipal supply or borewell groundwater, and which part of the region you live in. But for a very large share of NCR households, especially in the satellite cities, the daily reality is hard water, often with high dissolved solids on top.

Why NCR water is hard

Piped supply drawn from the Yamuna and Ganga is treated and moderately hard. The problem is that piped supply doesn't reach everyone reliably — and the NCR has grown far faster than its water infrastructure. As a result, a huge number of homes, apartment societies, and offices depend on deep borewells.

That groundwater is naturally hard, carrying calcium and magnesium, and in much of the region it also runs high in total dissolved solids (TDS). In some outer pockets, over-extraction has left the groundwater brackish and salty. So the hardness you experience depends heavily on your source and your locality.

It varies across NCR

This is the key thing to understand about NCR water:

  • Gurgaon — heavy borewell dependence in many sectors and societies; hard, high-TDS water is common.
  • Noida & Greater Noida — borewell groundwater is typically hard, with high TDS in several areas.
  • Faridabad & Ghaziabad — mixed supply; borewell areas face hardness and elevated TDS.
  • Central Delhi — more piped Yamuna/Ganga supply, moderately hard, but older buildings and some colonies still use borewells.

The only way to know your situation is to test your own supply — two homes a few kilometres apart can have very different water.

What hard, high-TDS water does to your home

  • Scales up geysers and heating elements — the leading cause of early geyser failure.
  • Clogs pipes and taps with limescale, cutting flow over time.
  • Shortens washing-machine and RO life — high TDS makes purifiers work harder and wear faster.
  • Spots utensils and glassware with white residue.
  • Dries out skin and hair — a constant complaint across NCR's hard-water belts.
  • Affects taste where TDS or salinity is high.

How to check your water

Because NCR water varies so much, test two things: hardness (mg/L as calcium carbonate) with a home strip, and TDS with an inexpensive meter. Above 180 mg/L hardness means you have hard water; a high TDS reading points to dissolved solids or salinity that a softener alone won't remove.

The fix: a water softener

Softener and purifier — often both in NCR

Many NCR homes need both. A softener fixes hardness so appliances survive — but it does not lower TDS or make brackish water safe to drink.
