Where to install a water softener

The principle is simple — main incoming line, before everything else. The practice depends on your tank, your pump and where you can put a drain.

The short answer: a whole-house softener goes on the main incoming water line, upstream of every outlet, so all water in the house is treated. It needs a nearby drain for regeneration, enough space for the tank and brine tank, and ideally shade if it's outdoors.

The logic is straightforward — a softener can only treat water that passes through it, so it has to sit at the point where all your water enters. What makes real installations more involved is that Indian homes usually have an overhead tank and a pump in the chain, and where the softener sits relative to those changes things.

Everything downstream of the softener gets treated water. Everything upstream doesn't. That's the entire placement principle, and every decision below is a variation on it.

Before the tank, or after the pump?

Both arrangements are used in Indian homes, and neither is universally right.

Before the storage tank

The softener treats water as it fills the tank, so everything stored is already soft. Simple, and it means the whole system downstream is protected.

The consideration is flow rate — the unit has to handle the rate at which your tank fills, which can be higher than normal household demand.

After the pump

The softener treats water on demand at household pressure, sized to your actual usage rate rather than the tank-fill rate.

The consideration here is that anything between the tank and the softener — the tank itself, that section of pipe — still sees hard water.

Which is right for you depends on your flow rates, where the pump sits, and where you have space and drainage. For a compact domestic unit it's often obvious from the layout. What the installation spot needs

A drain nearby

Regeneration flushes brine and rinse water, which has to go somewhere. A floor drain, utility drain or drainage point close by is usually the binding constraint on placement.

Enough space

You need room for the resin tank and the brine tank beside it, plus clearance to open the brine lid and top up salt without moving anything.

Access to the main line

The unit has to be plumbed into the incoming line with isolation and bypass valves, so the pipe run needs to be reachable.

Shade, if outdoors

Direct sun degrades the tank and valve over time. A covered service area, shaded balcony or utility space is better than open exposure.

Don't skip the bypass. A proper installation includes bypass valves so the softener can be isolated for service without cutting water to the house. Installations done without one mean any maintenance leaves you with no supply — and it's far more work to add later than to fit at the start.

Before installation day

Check these first

  • Measure your hardness — the installer needs it to configure the unit, and it should already have informed which capacity you bought
  • Confirm the space — measure where the tank and brine tank will actually sit, including lid clearance
  • Identify the drain — know where regeneration water will discharge before the installer arrives
  • Locate the main line — and check it's accessible, not buried behind finished work
  • Decide the arrangement — before the tank or after the pump, based on your layout
  • Plan for salt access — you'll be carrying 25 kg bags to this spot regularly, so an awkward location becomes a permanent nuisance

That last point gets overlooked more than any other. A softener tucked into a hard-to-reach corner is fine on installation day and irritating for the next ten years.

Should you install it yourself?

It depends entirely on the unit.

Compact point-of-use units — like a single-bathroom softener — are relatively simple. They connect to one outlet rather than cutting into the main line, and a competent DIY approach is reasonable.

Whole-house units — these involve cutting into the main supply, fitting isolation and bypass valves, arranging drainage, and configuring regeneration. That's plumbing work, and the failure modes are real: leaks, a unit that's been plumbed in backwards, or an installation with no way to isolate it.

The most common DIY error isn't dramatic — it's a bypass left open, so water flows around the softener rather than through it. Everything looks installed, nothing is being treated, and you only discover it when the scale keeps forming.

For commercial installations — hotels, hospitals, apartment blocks, industrial process water — placement is determined by peak flow rate rather than a general rule, and a site survey is genuinely necessary rather than a formality. The SoftPro range covers these, with installation support.

After installation

Two things to confirm before the installer leaves:

  • Test the water at a tap — confirm softened water is actually reaching outlets, not bypassing the unit
  • Understand the regeneration setup — whether it's manual, timed or metered, and what you need to do (and how often) to keep it running
