A water softener removes dissolved calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water ‘hard’ — using an ion-exchange resin. This stops limescale forming on geysers, washing machines, taps and RO membranes, extending appliance life and reducing maintenance.
A water softener treats hardness (calcium and magnesium) to protect appliances and plumbing, but does not make water safe to drink. A water purifier such as RO removes contaminants for drinking-water safety. They solve different problems and are often used together.

Softened water is safe for most people but has a slightly higher sodium content from the ion-exchange process. For drinking, EIA recommends pairing a softener with an RO purifier. Softening is about protecting appliances, not drinking-water purification.
